About

Catherine Chan You Fee (b. London, 2001) is an emerging artist living and working in London. She is a recent graduate from the University of the Arts London, Camberwell in 2024 with a BA in Fine Art Painting.

Chan specialises in watercolour portraits that reexamine the human condition. Exploring the idiosyncratic, the conscious and subconscious, character. These faces are born from her imagination. They capture glimpses of strangers, media and archetypes she draws out of her mind's eye. Eyes, mouths or obscured features act as coordinates amongst the composite of portraits. Faces emerge from fuchsia shadows, golden smiles and grinding grillz greet you, heads without eyes but with undeniable gazes. They are strangers, and yet familiar.

Together they are a crowd, a field of colour and a psychological landscape. They celebrate, scrutinise, examine, challenge, connect and encourage. They demand an active engagement. To choose, order and make sense of these innumerable faces. Within Chan's portraits there are those who are chosen often, those who are chosen once or twice, those who she loves, and those are who are loved by all. We connect not over the painting but over the people we see within them. A shared reaction spanning across different visions.
